Ever ask yourself, "Where do I start?". This Q comes up with every client I have, and is often the reason people seek me out in the first place. It sounds like: "My business is starting to take off, and now I have more clients and they call me at all hours of the day and my social life is dying off because I love my work. How do I do it all?" Or sometimes it sounds like: "I have really low energy, and I have young kids, and work part time, and run the household, where do I start without something important falling through the cracks?" And we always fix overwhelm the same way. We start with you. At the center of all these moving pieces, your work, family, social life, health is one thing. You. And trying to fix any of the moving pieces first would be like putting a new tire on a broken rim, it will look good for a few miles, but soon enough it will be deflated and your rim even more damaged from another bumpy ride. There are these funny phrases people say that sound real nice when it comes to tackling overwhelm, things like "time management" or "detox" and "work-life balance". And those are great theories. But they are really just new tires on a worn rim too. Let's start with you. Right now. Because here's the biggest thing I've learned as a coach - it's almost impossible, or at least a whole lot more like putting teeth - to help someone craft a life that loves them back, when they are too tired, stressed or overwhelmed. First thing we do, is boost your energy level. That's it. And that starts....drum roll...by slowing down. Slowing down is quickest way to get there faster. When your energy level is naturally up, well then your brain is firing on all cylinders again and you begin to see new opportunities and ways of doing things AND your body is actually up to the task. But here's the deal - Self Care is NOT for everyone. We all say we want to take better care of ourselves, but the bigger truth is that most people won't. They have their reasons (change is unpredictable, or being unhappy is at least more familiar, or they don't want to feel alienated from loved ones). But having some basic "me time" really is the only way to prosper for the long haul. Sure you can ride on a flat tire until you get to the next exit, but you aren't going to make it to your destination, and even if you did, you'd be so worn out you wouldn't be able to enjoy it. (Case and point all of the hard working folks that retire at 65 and promptly have a heart attack.) The beauty of this, is that taking care of yourself isn't an all or nothing kind of thing. Who has 3 hours a day for exercise, making organic meals, journaling, meditation and getting a massage? Not most of my clients. 10 minutes a day works wonders. Now I'm not going to talk down to you and give you some obvious places to start - drink more water, go for a walk, sit quietly for 5 minutes with that book you've been putting off. You are smart, and know yourself better than anyone, and I bet you could list 3 things off the top of your head that would serve you better than rushing to the next thing right now.
