Do friends, coworkers, clients seem to gravitate to you and open up? Do they confide in you, seek you out to be a sounding board, want your ideas, or trust you to lend a hand?
And it's so easy for you to be in that role. You love giving ideas, encouragement and helping others.
For every client I have, this is their greatest asset and biggest problem.
In just the last two weeks, at least three clients shared that they feel like a fraud, because everyone sees them as the strong successful one, but secretly they don't really feel like that.
They feel human and messy and unsure. You know, like the rest of us!
One client, with an amazing career, secretly binges on junk food at night to distract from how lonely she feels.
Another client, the go-to person for seemingly everyone around her, is secretly saddled with fear and anxiety and finds herself snapping at her spouse when she's on edge.
And yet another client, a health professional that has a thriving practice, has overworked for so long that she secretly suffers from chronic migraines, stomach aches and liver dysfunction - "What will my clients think if they know that I promote health but am not healthy myself?"
When did we buy into the myth that if we are strong and successful that we must also have everything figured out perfectly?
You see, your greatest strength, isn't your "having it all together" version of yourself. It just might just be your vulnerability, for in vulnerability lies our ability to connect with others.
When you dare to say, "Hey, I need a little help on this." or "I'm feeling a little down today, can we grab a cup of tea together?" you just did something more powerful than having it all together.
You gave your friend, coworker, loved one, permission to not be perfect also.
You went from having to stand strong on an island alone, to being part of humanity.
You can be the model of someone who has good things going for them, and yet also hits roadblocks and feels the full range of human emotions too.
Nobody wants to be around Mr. or Ms. Perfect all the time.
It is the combination of success and soul you have, when you dare to replace your guard with connection, that sparks the flame of courage in those that look up to you. You serve them in a larger way as a leader that embodies both humanity and magnificence, replacing the unattainable myth of perfection with relief and a newfound ability to recognize that strength comes hand in hand with our messy times.
