Do you have the guts to do what it takes to live your best life? I’m not talking figuratively here -- I mean literally -- are your bowels in order?
80% of our immune system is housed within our gut. EIGHTY PERCENT!! Or if you prefer your information delivered to you pinkies up...the gastrointestinal system plays a key role in the complex mechanisms of immunoregulation.
So if your gut health is compromised it’s pretty safe to assume that you aren’t feeling your best. And if you aren’t feeling your best how are you suppose to enjoy the quality of your life or be the top performer at your job?
When working with my clients I usually start by investigating their digestive track before moving on to other areas of their life. And not just because I still have the humor of a 6 year old -- fart in front of me and I will laugh out loud, every time-- but because I know that until we address issues of the gut we can’t successfully work on matters of the heart, body and mind.
You may be surprised to know that a gut in distress does not always appear as a stomach ache. It can also present itself to you as one of the following:
Anxiety
Poor sleep
Racing mind
Frequently occurring colds, sinus infection or flu
Headaches/Migraines
Autoimmune disorders
Chronic fatigue
Chronic inflammation
Vitamin/mineral deficiency
Malnutrition (whether you are thin or not)
Here are my top favorite tips to get your gut back in order so that it works with you and not against you. Some of these things may feel difficult to implement at first but in the long run will save you time, energy and money.
1. Stop treating yourself to diarrhea. Or constipation for that matter. Diarrhea and constipation are two of the biggest reactions to eating foods that are not right for our bodies. When occurring frequently this puts a lot of strain and stress on the digestive symptom. When we get a new job or a big promotion we often like to reward ourselves with treats such as ice cream, greasy food or alcohol. The same is true if we’ve had a particularly rough day and want an instant pick me up. And while having these treats in moderation is fine, we often go hog wild on them because, well, Americans and moderation don’t really go hand-in-hand.Think of it this way. It’s like saying to yourself “Wow, I did a great job today, let me celebrate with a big batch of loose stool!”. Or “Man, today sucked. I bet some rock hard constipation will make things right again.”. Start actually treating yourself with foods and activities that nourish and energize you….you deserve it!
2. Discovering your food sensitives is free. Testing for food sensitivities (I’m not talking full blown allergies) doesn’t have to cost you a fortune in co-pays. In fact, eliminating foods from your diet is completely free, it only takes some willpower. The easiest way to figure out what foods may be damaging your gut and leaving you with nasty side effects is to cut them out of your diet entirely for 14 days and then reintroduce them. I’ve watched a lot of “Naked and Afraid” and I’m telling you that if people can survive 21 days solely on half of a snail you can go two measly weeks without corn. And this means that you are going to have to start paying attention to food labels. Corn is one sneaky b*tch. The most common food allergens are dairy, processed sugars, wheat, corn, eggs, and soy. Start with these foods and go from there. You can eliminate them all at once or one or two at a time. After two full weeks have gone by without them, reintroduce them back into your diet one day at a time and take note of how you feel before and a few hours after you eat them again.
3. Heal-thy gut. After you have identified the foods that are causing your demise it is time to begin healing your gut. Taking a good quality probiotic is the simplest step and these can easily be purchased at your local health food store or online. Other ways to increase the healthy bacteria in your body are to eat more good quality fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, miso and kombucha.
