When did it get cool to “hustle”?
Probably around the same time the adage “no pain no gain” came out and acid washed jeans were a good call. Both have never worked for me, and here’s why.
The less I do the more gets done.
Shouldn't it be the other way around? I mean that’s what we’re taught right?
I had a major aha moment in a private jet at 30,000 feet.
The manager for a platinum selling artist was telling me the secrets to being successful - work hard, do everything you can to outshine everyone else, trust no one….the regular stuff. Ok, I thought.
BUT THEN IT HIT ME - this guy is super stressed out all the time! He doesn’t see his family for weeks or months at a time, is being screamed at by spoiled celebs and even picks out his daily outfit based on how his clients want him to dress, not how he likes to dress.
The little voice in my head went off - “don’t take advice from people that aren’t where you want to be”.
I mean, have you ever been told to work more by someone who is overworking and stressed out?
You wouldn’t take hair tips from a stylist with a permed mullet, right?
Or accounting advice from your friend who is always broke?
Why do we take the “do more” advice from people who are always stuck doing more and sleeping less?
Here’s the answer - it makes us feel safe. We feel more in control if we think what we do all day will make us more successful.
But that’s not the whole story. It’s a whole lot of busy work. And at that pace you aren’t working for a living, you are working for a heart attack, lost sleep, mood swings and less time doing what you love.
Here’s the solution: Slow down, do less.
Don’t like that answer? I get it. Totally get it actually.
But here’s the thing. Every time you slow down, giving your ever-chattering mind a break, you will get 4 things - Quiet, Calm, Perspective and Connected.
You will start to see the full list of things you “should do” that day through fresh eyes. You will start to recognize which ones really aren’t that important, and which you really want to do. Your full plate will have less on it.
Slowing down feels like taking a leap of faith at first because it isn’t what we are conditioned to do. But here’s how slowing down has changed my life.
My brain is super fast, it loves to do more, Do More, DO MORE. But when I slow down, I suddenly get very clear about the action steps I’m taking. I get a gut instinct about what the best next step is.
I no longer need to do a million little things to reach my next goal, I see the few best opportunities and put my focus there. And because I’m focused I actually notice more opportunities.
When you are racing through your day, you’re like the guy that bumped into me on the sidewalk yesterday because he was so focused on texting, you’re missing life passing you buy.
