Here’s one of the most dangerous phrases I used to use: “I don’t have time for this!”
Or you fill in the blank - I don’t have time to _________ … go out to eat for lunch, to return my friend’s phone call, to take a vacation, get a massage, read a book.
Ever catch yourself saying some variation on that?
Just this past fall while living on a tour bus with clients, I'd often hear members of our entourage say backstage, “I don’t have time to grocery shop, or brush my teeth, or eat dinner tonight.”
Trust me, it’s not all glamour! We are in front of a camera for a reason - so viewers can’t smell us! Ha!
Gosh I remember working so hard during college I even once said “I don’t have time to take a shower today.”
I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to my dorm roommate - sorry Erin! I’m not apologizing to Erin because I smelled bad - though I bet I did - but because she had to live with the version of me that worked so hard I gave her, myself, and everyone else, the burnt to a crisp-tired-stressed out version of myself. I gave them a shadow of who I really am - vibrant, well rested, patient, creative, productive and generous.
In fact, I worked so hard during college to pay tuition that I drained my adrenal glads, causing depression, anxiety and eventually a dull numbness that was so strong I had to take time off of school to nourish myself back to health full-time. I had to quit all of those jobs, and even school for a year, to fix what I had broken by over working. By over doing it I actually gave myself more to do and it took me longer to reach my goals.
The truth is that I always have the time, you always have the time, It’s just a matter of where we decide to spend our time.
I wish I had someone who could have told me then, what I now learned the hard way - that we have been lied too - working hard is not the only way to be successful. While I hear entourage members say “I don’t have time for this" - I rarely hear one of my A-list client's say it, and there is a reason for that.
If you really want to get things done - the key is slowing down on a regular basis.
If you don’t want to burn yourself to a anxiety ridden crisp, you must take a moment each day to pause and get clear.
It could look like this:
1) Take out a piece of paper/pen, write down all the things you want to get done today - spend 1 minute on this.
2) Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths, and imagine you are about to go on a glorious 1 week vacation. You have just a couple hours before the big trip to wrap up any loose ends before you are dashed away to your private jet.
3) Open your eyes, and circle the few things you MUST get done before your 1 week vacation. What loose ends must be tied to stay afloat in your personal or professional life?
4) Now for the remaining items - they can wait. They can wait until after you do something else you really want to do like rest, see a friend, cook dinner - it’s just not that important - certainly not more important than staying healthy enough to be in the game at all. And tomorrow, if any of these items still feels like they must be done you can add it to the list again and start all over.
When we slow down we get clear about what really matters. We focus in on what actions will help us get where we want to be, and see what busy work we could do without because it doesn’t add value to our big picture.
Slowing down LIBERATES us from activities that we used to do unconsciously or out of habit or because we “should”.
It frees up your schedule, giving you space to not just take a shower, but to avoid burning out and needing to take a time out from things all together. And while you might have more time to take a vacation when you slow down, you also won’t feel like you need one as often, because mini vacations are now built in to you every day.
